If you’ve ever sat through a English Premier League match and caught yourself shouting at the screen because a defender conceded a late goal or a striker missed a open tap-in, congratulations — you already have the competitive heart of a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) manager.
With over 11 million active managers worldwide, Fantasy Premier League is the official, free-to-play fantasy football game of the Premier League. It transforms every matchday into a nerve-wracking, thrilling experience where every goal, assist, clean sheet, and save earns you real fantasy points.
Whether you’re looking to dominate your office mini-league or climb the global rankings, here is everything you need to know about what FPL is and how to get started.

How Does Fantasy Premier League Work?
At its core, FPL makes you the manager of a virtual squad composed of real-life Premier League players.
When your selected players perform well in real matches — like scoring goals or keeping clean sheets — you earn points. If they underperform, pick up yellow cards, or concede goals, your point totals suffer.
1. The £100m Budget & Squad Rules
When setting up your team before Gameweek 1, you are given a virtual budget of £100.0 million to recruit 15 players:
- 2 Goalkeepers
- 5 Defenders
- 5 Midfielders
- 3 Forwards
The 3-Player Constraint: You can select a maximum of 3 players from any single Premier League club. For example, if you pick three Manchester City players, you cannot add a fourth, regardless of your remaining budget.
Setting Your Starting XI and Captaincy
Every week before the Gameweek Deadline (usually 90 minutes before the first kickoff of the round), you must select your starting 11 players and designate a Captain and Vice-Captain.
[ Starting 11 Players ] ---> Earn 100% of their points [ Designated Captain ] ---> Earns DOUBLE points (2x) [ 4 Bench Players ] ---> Earn 0 points (unless a starter doesn't play)
- Captain (C): Your captain’s score is doubled for that Gameweek. Choosing the right captain each week is often the single biggest factor in winning your mini-league.
- Vice-Captain (VC): If your captain plays 0 minutes in real life, your double points automatically transfer to your vice-captain.
- Bench Order: If one of your starting XI players does not feature at all, the FPL system automatically subs in your bench players in the order you prioritized them (from left to right).
How FPL Points Are Scored
Points are awarded based on real match actions across the 90 minutes.
| Action | Goalkeeper / Defender | Midfielder | Forward |
| Goal Scored | 6 pts | 5 pts | 4 pts |
| Assist | 3 pts | 3 pts | 3 pts |
| Clean Sheet (60+ mins played) | 4 pts | 1 pt | 0 pts |
| Playing up to 60 mins | 1 pt | 1 pt | 1 pt |
| Playing 60+ mins | 2 pts | 2 pts | 2 pts |
| Saves (per 3 saves) | 1 pt | N/A | N/A |
| Penalty Save | 5 pts | 5 pts | 5 pts |
Deductions & Bonus Points
- Yellow Card: -1 pt
- Red Card: -3 pts
- Own Goal: -2 pts
- Penalty Miss: -2 pts
- Bonus Points System (BPS): In every match, the top 3 performing players according to official match metrics are awarded 3, 2, and 1 extra bonus points respectively.
Transfers, Free Hits & Chips
FPL isn’t a “set and forget” game; managing your team throughout the 38-gameweek season is where the strategy lies.
Free Transfers
Each week, you get 1 Free Transfer to swap an underperforming or injured player for a new one. If you save your transfer, it rolls over (up to a maximum cap). Additional transfers beyond your free quota cost -4 points each from your total gameweek score.
FPL Chips
Every manager receives powerful single-use “chips” designed to boost scores during pivotal weeks:
- Wildcard (2 per season): Allows you to make unlimited free transfers for a single Gameweek without point penalties.
- Free Hit (1 per season): Gives you unlimited transfers for one week only. Your team resets to its previous state for the following Gameweek.
- Bench Boost (1 per season): Allows all 15 players (including bench players) to score points for one Gameweek.
- Triple Captain (1 per season): Multiplies your captain’s score by 3x instead of 2x.
Essential Beginner Tips to Win Your Mini-League
- Focus on Fixtures, Not Just Form: Look ahead at the upcoming 4–6 matches. Players facing weaker defensive teams are much more likely to score high points.
- Protect Your Transfers: Avoid taking unnecessary “-4 point hits” early in the season. Patience frequently beats reactive trading.
- Penalty & Set-Piece Takers Are Gold: Midfielders and forwards who take penalties, corners, and direct free kicks offer consistent avenues for points.
- Keep an Eye on the Deadline: Always set your team before the weekly deadline to avoid being caught out by late team news or unexpected injuries.
